Where is my way?

One of the blessings (is it!!!) of being a bachelor is the unlimited time you can sit in front of a computer (read it as Internet) in home.
As a guy who has short-term memory loss, I tend to forget the routes and directions while travelling. So today I was googling to find a solution for the same. Yes I thought of finding some solution to LEARN routes (inside city only) which I might use regularly. To my surprise, I was able to find solution for the same, from not only one website, but from three good websites. I felt sorry that I had missed this technology for sometime. (I am not sure of the date from when this has been available in India, Google Maps has been providing this for US for more than 2 years). I am not sure of how well Maps technology is being used in India. My friends in US are using it extensively for sometime now.

Lets come to the point. I was able to get three good sites for this activity. MapmyIndia, Google Maps and Yahoo India Maps. MapmyIndia is one of the pioneers in India to commercialise the use of the Maps technology. I have heard that these guys are good in GPS devices also.

Lets see how to use them. In Google Maps, go to ‘Get Directions’ and type the two places for which you want to find the route. Even in Yahoo India Maps also, you have to go to ‘Get Directions’ only. In MapmyIndia, you have to go to ‘Directions’ link.

The places can be within a big city. There are routes even between comparatively smaller towns. Yes I was able to get the direction for my home town also (I tried route between Rajapalayam and Srivilliputtur). Yahoo India Maps goes one step ahead and lists all the Rajapalayams available in TN (I was surprised to see 3 Rajapalayams in TN). This is an advantage in Yahoo India Maps. These routes between smaller towns are not available in MapmyIndia.

For a sample, I have given the screen shots for routes between BTM and Shanthi Nagar, Bangalore.

Here is a look at Google Maps’ route.

This gives two possible routes and we can compare the two in a single page itself.
This option is really good for first time travelers.

Here is a look at Yahoo India Maps’ route.

Even though this gives only one route, this has an advantage of giving routes for Car, Bike and surprisingly by walk also :) This site also gives more options in BTM Layout to choose from.

Here is a look at MapmyIndia.
This is comparatively not catchy in the way maps are looking. when compared to the other two sites, the route is a little bit elaborate here.

This is just an overview. It will definitely be enlightening to see these sites whenever you need. Try and enjoy maadi.

Try to use public transport…

In Uncategorized on November 6, 2009 at 12:37 am

Let me start with my experience on one fine evening this week.

I started from office, asusual, at 19:30 in office cab. By the time I reached Sarjapur junction, it was around 20:10. Winter has started and its really cold in the late evenings and early mornings (Dont know about nights. Thats the kind of sleep I used to have). Thanks to the government’s pro-traveller (!) approach, (2 flyovers under construction one in Agara and another in Sarjapur junction) my cab was made to wait in the signal for more than 20 minutes. And ours was not the only one, we were just one among the 200-300 vehicles in that junction. It was very hot and little suffocating. I was thinking that this was an unusual climate in a winter-start night. My cab crossed the signal after struggling for 4-5 rounds in the same signal and I was travelling in Iblur section of the Outer Ring Road. A sudden breeze of fresh and cool air started flowing around me and created a freshness in me. The whole stretch till Agara was really cool and fresh. It was all because of a large tract of land full of trees in that area, thanks to the Iblur Army Camp. It then stuck me that the heat faced in Sarjapur Signal are due to the absence of trees and a large number of polluting vehicles in that area, due to rapid rapid urban development. This is applicable to almost all the Indian cities.

Why not have a large number of trees all over the cities, all around the skyscrapers and on the sides of all the roads? This seems to be a distant dream as this may take a long time.

But we can do one simple thing to reduce this environmental degradation. Let us reduce the number of vehicles plying on the roads. Let us TRY to use public/community transportation whenever possible.
